WA: Psychiatric patient on three murder charges

A 55-year-old mental hostel resident has appeared in a Perth court to face two counts
of murder and one of attempted murder.

PATRICIA MAUREEN DUNNE is charged with the wilful murder of ROBYN SWAIN at a mental
health hostel in the Perth suburb of South Guildford on September 6 this year.

She's also charged with the attempted murder of a 58-year-old woman at the same hostel
on December 5.

The third charge relates to the death of DUNNE's four-month-old son ANTHONY MICHAEL
DUNNE in suburban Lynwood on March 28, 1972.

Police allege DUNNE smothered the three victims with a pillow as they slept.

Detective Sergeant RICK WESKIN of Midland police says the two deaths had not initially
been recorded as suspicious.

He says police had only been alerted on December 17 after DUNNE allegedly made comments
to a staff member at the hostel about Ms SWAIN's death.

DUNNE was not required to plea when she faced the Midland Magistrate's Court today
and has been remanded to Graylands Psychiatric Hospital for an assessment.

She's due to face court again on January 28.
