BCC Kicks off SM and Internet Access Services of PHS

BEIJING, Dec 02, 2003 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- On November 27, 2003, Beijing Communication Corporation (BCC), one of branches of China Network Communications, announced that Beijing would start short message (SM) and the Internet access services for PHS (Personal Handyphone System) subscribers soon.

Before the end of 2003, BCC will launch a new business based onPHS, namely, wireless downloading, which will vie with handset data businesses of China Mobile Communications Corporation (China Mobile) and China United Telecommunications Corporation (China Unicom).

BCC discloses that when citizens in Beijing have PHSs that can send messages, and the PHS subscribers will enjoy messaging services between PHSs in Beijing. While receiving messages, they will not pay for them. The fee is CNY 0.08 (USD 1 = CNY 8.2771) per message.

In addition, through PHSs, PHS subscribers who use notebook computers and palm computers in Beijing enjoy the Internet access based on the PHS standards. The fees are composed of twoparts, communication fee and information fee. The former is CNY0.02 per minute, and the latter is CNY 0.07 per minute. The peak speed is 64Kb.
