NT: Emergency flood sirens sounded in Katherine =3 Darwin
Commander VANDERLAAN says people should take bedding .. personal items and food with
them .. to one of three evacuation centres at Katherine High School and two primary schools.
She says buses are available to assist the evacuation.
The commander says the steps are being taken in case Katherine Town Centre gets cut
off from Katherine east.
NT Chief Minister CLARE MARTIN and Emergency Services Minister PAUL HENDERSON are
expected to visit Katherine to assess the situation later this afternoon.
The evacuated residents will join nursing home residents and hospital patients who
were moved last night.
The Katherine River's expected to peak at 18.5 metres today .. following monsoonal rains.
Eight years ago Katherine .. 300 km south of Darwin .. was devastated by floods when
the river burst its banks.
Four people were killed .. half the population was forced to flee their homes.
And all the businesses in the shopping area were flooded when the Katherine River rose
to a record 20.3 metres in January 1998.
